GEO-HEP seasonal heat storage – from the module to operation
Single module, a 153-module example, the calculation of 581.4 MWh and recharging during operation. Output examples assume operating conditions without storage losses.

SEASONAL HEAT STORAGE
01 / THE CHALLENGE
Heat is not always available when needed.
For example, in summer:
Surplus heat is available.
During the heating season:
Heat is needed to meet demand.
Heat supply and heat demand
do not always coincide.
02 / THE INDIVIDUAL MODULE
Geo-Hep-Systems seasonal heat store
PER STORAGE MODULE
Up to
3.8
MWh
With full thermal stratification
at a maximum of 95 °C.
Approx. 29 m long
1.80 m outer diameter
Module ratio approx. 16 : 1 · Enlarged section detail · Capacity as specified in the project
03 / OUR WORKED EXAMPLE
A storage field with 153 modules.
50 × 100 m
Example site · 5,000 m²

Schematic layout · 17 × 9 modules · Actual arrangement requires project planning.
04 / THE CALCULATION
How we arrive at 581.4 MWh of storage.
153
Modules
×
3.8 MWh
per module
=
581.4
MWh in total
Maximum heat stored in this example
when fully charged.
05 / WHAT THE NUMBER MEANS
Stored heat differs from annual heat supply.
581.4 MWh
Maximum stored at any one time.
This is not an annual energy total.
While heat is being supplied,
fresh heat can recharge the store.
The following illustration shows a simplified heat supply balance.
06 / RECHARGING DURING OPERATION
Incoming heat reduces storage demand.
Heat source
Storage field
Heat users
2 MW
3 MW
1 MW from storage
WITHOUT RECHARGING
72 MWh / day
WITH 2 MW OF INCOMING HEAT
24 MWh / day
Example: constant 3 MW demand over 24 h · Net withdrawal excluding storage losses.
08 / THE PRINCIPLE
Store seasonally. Recharge during use.
Supply heat when it is needed.
With repeated recharging,
the heat supplied over a heating season
can exceed the store’s
single-charge capacity.
Depending on sources, demand, temperatures,
charge/discharge rates and storage losses.
Save surplus heat for later use.
Take in heat from
available sources.
Keep it in the Geo-Hep-Systems
seasonal heat store.
Supply buildings or a heat network
when heat is needed.
The individual storage module is the basis of this system.
